  • Beschrijving: The film shows a few silent shots of A. Sochos (1888 - 1975) and some interesting shots of the island of Tinos. Voiced over are texts of the architect and academic Dimitris Pikionis about the sculptural tradition on the island. The shots of his sculptures are particularly appealing.

    2. SOCHOS' DESCENT AND SCULPTURE STUDIES Antony Sochos was born on Tinos in 1888. His father was a folk marble carver, while his uncle was the famous sculptor Lazaros Sochos. Antonis Sochos comes to Athens in 1908 and registers in the third year of the Fine Art School, due to his practical knowledge. Among his teachers is Lazaros Sochos. In 1921 he goes to Paris, studies history of art and looks for new forms of expression. (TINOS - ATHENS)
    3. INFLUENCES TO HIS WORK AND HIS PERSONAL MANNER No particular personality influenced his work. He was influenced by tradition and classicism. His work is inornate and emanates a profound religiousness. He studied history so that he could cast profound content in new forms. Wood carved by Sochos's masterly hand assumes diverse forms: mythical, folk and divine. The path he followed was the marriage of past experiences with his personal beliefs, handed down to him through the marble-carvers' tradition, the agents of sculpture of modern civilization.     4. PUBLIC RECOGNITION OF HIS WORK Sochos achieved public recognition during his lifetime. He received a lot of international awards, was elected to the Academy and given tenure at the Polytechnic University. (EXHIBITION AREAS - ATHENS)
